Since Tudi God is an old friendly man considered a god with the function of a mediator between the gods, the ghosts and the living. The idea of being in between two worlds was fascinating and is clearly implemented in this design.
By analyzing the surrounding district and the formerly built temples for Tudi Gong it seems obvious to use big roof structure to provide as much weatherproof areas as possible for communal celebrations and activities. With all the changes happening specifically in this area, it is necessary to reinterpret a traditional proven and trusted form. By adopting the big roofscape of the surrounding the new temple integrates in the urbanistic area and acts as mediator between the existing city structure and the newly built parkland and sewage works and gives the community a new meeting point with an unforgettable atmosphere.
The landscape created in the new park area is reinterpreted in an upside-down way. By using bamboo sticks in different lengths, spectacular spaces are created and traditional elements such as most of the walls could be omitted and creates an open space with exceptional qualities. The landscape-creating elements are suspended from the roof structure and therefore create flowing spaces, inviting to explore this sacral place offering very scenic perspectives.
On the one hand the bamboo grid allows surprising views through the entire building but also acts as a thick opaque volume depending on the viewpoint within the structure. The two landscapes approximate and repel each other and therefore create a tense and exciting inbetween.
This juxtaposition of the floorplan-landscape and the hanging roof-landscape take in different functions, while the level above grade are used for specific use by the community and employees, the level above below grade is not only an atmospheric space but also a symbolic space for the gods and ghosts to inhabit.
Bamboo as a naturally grown material is used to symbolize the transcendent gods and ghosts, where humans are neither involved in the use of this landscape nor in the production itself of the material. Whereas concrete is an artificial stone made by humans and their elaborated technology, therefore this is the space for them to use. Concrete as a material can be given any form and is very accurate and in this case is the counterpart to the organic forms of the roofscape.
